African beauty celebrated in Ports 1961 show

It was a beautiful morning yesterday watching the Ports 1961 collection here at Fashion Week.
The show, a stunning Safari-themed collection, was breathtaking.
But what also took my breath away was the number of black models in the show - nine, including some of the top ladies in the business right now - Chanel Iman, Alek Wek and Liya Kebede.
Yes, I counted.
Understand that in the fashion world, you're lucky if you see one or two black models. Sometimes, you'll see a larger number of black models in lines like Baby Phat, but nine in one show was historic.
Lots of designers have used Africa as a theme, but some use only one or two black models. And some designers never see black models as part of their vision.
Artistic vision is usually given as the reason. Make your own conclusions, folks.
But as an African American, it's one of those things you can't help but notice.
It's funny because after the show, that was the big buzz amongst the black folks watching the show.
So yes, seeing nine black models, plus three Asians was news. And a cause for celebration.
Bravo!!!!
