Relating to the Fantasy - From "America's Next Top Model" to Milan Fashion Week
For fashion fans, these are the best of times.
Milan Fashion Week is wrapping up this week and among the last major designer shows presenting Spring 2008 collections is Versace.
Fans of the television reality show "America's Next Top Model" are already buzzing about this season's debut earlier this week and who are this season's frontrunners.
Bravo's critically acclaimed series "Project Runway" just announced its fourth season will debut Nov. 14. Among the contests is a designer originally from Fairfield, NJ.
"Runway" style guru Tim Gunn has his own show on Bravo. Other shows like "Full Frontal Fashion" and "What Not To Wear" have legions of fans.
Why the popularity?
The element of fantasy is a huge part of the fashion world's allure. Shows like "Project Runway" and "America's Next Top Model" do a good job at showing the reality behind the glamor.
And who doesn't like to watch dreamers fight for the brass ring? "America's Next Top Model," for example, presents a cadre of young women who dream of being the next Tyra Banks or Heidi Klum.
We speculate on whether the Jersey Girl, Lisa, will continue to look as strong as she did this first week and whether her past as an exotic dancer will count against her.
We empathize and root for Heather, the gorgeous girl we have learned has a form of autism.
Real women can watch "What Not To Wear" or "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" and get realistic tips on how to make fashion work for them.
As for Fashion Week, yes it's about fantasy visions.
Most of us will never wear a dress like this from Versace.
But some of us might. And there are others of us who will do their best to find something similar that may be more in their price range. Our awareness of how to make designer fashions work for us is part of what has made Fashion Week a major event in the major fashion capitols of the world such as New York, London, Milan and Paris.
It also must be said that we have become much more aware at every level, not just about who the top designers are, but who amongst our favorite celebrities wears which labels.
Even those of us who profess to not owning or being able to afford designer goods like this outfit from Versace can find something at the local mall or discount store that is based on what was originally on the designer runway, whether it be a certain style, a color or a complete outfit.
So we watch. We study. We critique. And we dream.
