Poll of the Week: Lead in Lipstick - Do you Care?

For years we've heard various rumors that some lipsticks contained high amounts of lead. Some people have said this is a so-called Urban Myth.

Now, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a consumer rights group, is reporting that more than half of lipsticks the group tested contained lead. Among the brands tested - Cover Girl, L'Oreal and Christian Dior had more lead than others.

The testing, done by Bodycote Testing Group in Sante Fe Spring, Calif., was done on 33 brand name red lipsticks. The tests found that 61 per cent had detectable lead levels of 0.03 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm).

Apparently the FDA has not set a limit for lead in lipstick.

One third of the lipsticks tested contained an amount of lead that exceeded the US Food and Drug Administration's 0.1 ppm limit for lead in candy - a standard established to protect children from ingesting lead, the group said.

Lead can cause learning, language and behavioural problems such as reduced school performance and increased aggression.

According to the group, pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure. Lead has also been linked to infertility and miscarriage.

Are you concerned about lead in your lipstick?

what kind of choices are those? What about a spot for "yes - I am concerned and am changing my buying or wearing habits"

All you gave us is no, or yes but I'll still wear it.

You know, lipstick can indeed be made the god-given natural way.

And a lot of companies are already making it without lead and any other dangerous chemicals.

Then, why put lead and all these other toxic chemicals in the traditional lipstick and poison women?

Freaky!

I have read a detailed report about it at:
